For the next eleven weeks, we will be highlighting each of the artists in our new show, Engaging Women, which will be on view from March 8 – April 27.

Water Reflections 4

Pamela Gilliland’s career began in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she was a professional designer and artist. She continued in Cleveland as a Creative Director. Her design and art background allowed her to work for major companies including George Lucas Productions, Walt Disney World, Bayer Diagnostics, and General Electric. For the past 35 years, she has been a partner at Gilliland Design, a multidisciplinary design firm.

Gilliland’s strengths in subject and composition are a result of her multifaceted background. She developed her signature style through her advanced knowledge of concept and color.

In addition to teaching students from four year olds to college level, she continues to paint and design for local and global accounts. Gilliland’s work has been exhibited extensively in Midwest juried solo and group shows. Most recently, she had a solo exhibit at the Cleveland Botanical Gardens.

Pam Gilliland’s background as a designer and her passion for the natural world are the most powerful influences in her work. Designing for George Lucas Productions, Walt Disney World, and Bayer Diagnostics allowed her to learn to view subject matter in an atypical way. Composition became as critical to Gilliland as the subject itself. The design skill set in addition to fine art training are what make her paintings unique.

Much of Gilliland’s inspiration comes from observing nature. A favorite element is water. She was a competitive swimmer and sailor; always in the water. Some of her most successful series celebrate water’s mastery of abstraction; its ability to filter reality into a fluid fragmented form.
